Bio
I've been playing since around 1984-- when Eddie Van Halen was jumping around on stage and the guys in ZZ top were dressing sharp.
The 1st band I played in was a hard and heavy--metal band by the disgusting name of Screaming Fetus. This was about 1986. I was the youngster in the band who just played rhythm guitar, and I had nothing to do with naming the band. Perhaps the elders in the band may have been anti-abortion, but I don't know. In any case, we lived rock music; sometimes the lines were blurry between music and life. Our gigs were actually just the band having practice with fifty-plus guests. It's hard to remember just what happened to the band. I guess the Fetus burned out. It just died.
Beginning in 1987, I joined my high school's jazz band, playing electric guitar. I did that for a year, but the next year we needed a bass player, so I recruited a friend to take over on guitar while I took the bass. Thanks to my bro, James Barrera, who taught me some basics of how to play drums, I was also able to fill in for our drummer on occasion, out of necessity when he was out sick, as drums were more important for a jazz band than bass, if we had to choose. And sometimes we did.
In 1989-90, I played guitar again in Jazz Band, and I also had the opportunity to play in Concert Band. I played string bass, using a bow.
I graduated from high school and moved to Yosemite for a spell in the early '90s. There, I played music with lots of others. Most memorable was when I played as part of an acoustic duo, me on guitar and Bruce Shaw on mandolin. Bruce much later became something of a big shot in the newer bluegrass scene. But at that time (early and mid '90s), it was just a hoot to jam with him. He certainly inspired me to (later on) learn the mandolin.
In the mid '90s I moved back to So Cal and took some college courses. By the late '90s while I was still attending college, I was also playing in another rock band--Stone Wall Voodoo. We played several gigs at bars and breweries around the Pomona and Upland area, having a real good time, but school was too important. I needed to focus on my studies, so I quit the band.
Since then, I've graduated college, and I'm now teaching at both a high school and a community college. I'm happily married with children, also. With a family and two jobs, I don't have as much time for music as I'd like, but I still write music and still perform at small venues, usually solo acoustic.
